Even-Steven

Now this is a terrific modern project for an old fashioned Nana. Finding something to make for older boys is a real challenge, but these quick and easy, low maintenance pajamas are just the thing for any guys who no longer wear sleepers.  And that includes men.

Judy Day made this sleep set for her 8 year old grandson. His name is not Steven, but this was made to keep things even.  She loves heirloom sewing and smocking for his prissy little sister, but she always includes something special for Jackson. These were in his Easter package.

She simply purchased a pair of knit shorts and a tee shirt in colors to match the alma mater of Jackson’s maternal grandfather.  Since the boy already has more University of Tennessee Volunteers gear than most of the football team, he requested some Georgia Tech attire. I guess Judy didn’t want him going out in public in anything but UT duds.  Jackson loves them.

With our Robert now almost 5, I know it’s time for me to be looking ahead for masculine things to make. He, too, has a prissy sister and I don’t want him to feel slighted.  Of course, to his way of thinking, he’s got the better deal when he gets an embroidered Spiderman tee shirt and Laurel gets an heirloom sewn Swiss batiste dress. But the next time I make her a garment, I think he will get some Florida Gator pajamas, just to keep things even-steven.

Thanks for the inspiration, Judy!

Wedding Cruise Hats

For the 50+ out of town guests for our daughter’s wedding, we planned a Saturday afternoon cruise down the St.Johns River.

In our area, the wedding pre-ceremony activity is most often a guest golf tournament, usually for the men, with balls or some other minor golf equipment for favors.

Our out-of-town  guests ranged from the groom’s 85 year old grandmother to young mothers with 6 month old babies.  We wanted something they all could enjoy before the 6 p.m. wedding ceremony.

Gator Hearts

Sadly, the 2009 college football season is about over.  University of Florida’s final regularly scheduled game was played Saturday against the Florida State Seminoles.  It was a great Gator victory, 37-10.

Last week, our son and his wife were in Gainesville at The Swamp watching the victory over Florida International University.  Before the game, Shelly realized that she needed a new Gator shirt so I embroidered this one for her.  Continue reading

Gator Girl

Saturday, our family gathered to watch and then celebrate the Florida Gators victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks, 24-14. This game extended the winning streak to 20. Two of our grandchildren, Laurel and Robert, were here for the festivities, dressed for the occasion.GatorGirlscan

The design on Laurel’s shirt is one I have used before. A cheerleader skirt, braided pony tail and ball cap have been added to the baby alligator design from Brother’sMoskowitz card #6, with the help of BuzzEdit 2.

Gator Boys

appropriately garbed, but he still can’t do the Gator chomp

All three of my grandchildren have outgrown their Gator shirts at the same time, midseason.  I shouldn’t be surprised. They all grow like weeds and one weed grows about as fast as another.

Robert’s new shirt was featured in a recent post. (NOTE:  Check sporting gear category at top of page for more articles on team duds.) Laurel’s puff sleeved tee will be detailed next week.

Now Alastair is game ready, decked out in yet another Ralph Lauren Polo one piece suit,  clearance priced. It is newly disenfrancished from the sport of polo and rededicated to Gator football. Continue reading

Go Gators

Four year old Robert has outgrown all of his Gator shirts. With a home-based tailgate party scheduled at his house tomorrow for the big Florida/Georgia game, he needed some new team gear.

Just before I pulled out a shirt from my size 4 stash, his mother, Shelly, told me that she had a shirt for him that just needed embroidery. Their five-year old neighbor had outgrown this shirt and it was passed on, as children’s clothing and good will often are in their closely knit neighborhood.

Tailgating Accessories and Tips

Gators 13-LSU 3

Following a college football team offers so many opportunities for wholesome family fun. Some of our happiest family memories are set on Norman Field, in Gainesville, tailgating before a Florida Gator football game. For away games, we all crowd together in our living room, cheering, moaning, eating and chasing the babies away from in front of the TV. As was often said in our small town local newspaper coverage of each neighborhood, “A good time was had by all.”

There are also creative opportunities to pursue in the sewing room. The pictured embroidered terry cloth is actually a Martha Stewart dish cloth, repurposed as a tailgating napkin. When I see items in our team colors, I usually buy up everything on the shelf. So our tailgating box has a huge stack of these napkins, embroidered with a free “hungry gator” design offered many, many years ago, and text that names all SEC opponents and various other teams against whom our team has played. The opponent’s name on the napkin instigates a lot of  “Remember LSU 2008? 51-21 Gators! Wasn’t that a great game?”

When we have messy food, such as barbecued ribs, a paper napkin just won’t do the job. Wet, these napkins, are much more effective against sticky foods. There is some distance to the bathrooms and running water, so we always take several jugs of water, some with liquid detergent added. I wrap a piece of elastic around a tree, tuck in several Gator hand towels and hang a bar of soap from a ribbon.   This gives everyone, most importantly the cooks, easy opportunity to wash hands before preparing food.

Team Gear for Little Fans

GatorBabyAl

Football fans love to dress their children in team apparel.  These tiny, expensive togs come in such a limited variety that most fans are likely to see their child’s same duds being worn by the majority of the tots at the game.

Customized ready-to-wear provides your little one with unique, affordable garb that sets him apart from the other junior fans.  You just need the visionary eye of a bargain shopper, an eye which can spot team colors an aisle away.

This 100% cotton (VERY important for Florida infantwear) orange and blue Ralph Lauren Polo baby suit, originally priced at $70, was marked down to $17 on the clearance rack.  There were others in different colors, many of which I recognized as being suitable for other teams.  But hey, I only do Gator gear so they were still hanging when I was done shopping.

Tailgating

This is our set-up. We try to be at the same spot every game day.

Ah, game day at The Swamp.  Kickoff might be at 7 p.m. but if you want your regular tailgating spot at Norman Field, you’d better be there by 9 a.m.

sleepy tailGator–one year later he became our son-in-law

Since it’s a 2 hour drive to  Gainesville, that makes for an early start to a very long day.    And a lot of food–three full meals for as many as 75 hungry Gator fans.

We pass the day visiting with neighboring tailGators, watching football coverage on a  tv that plugs into a special connection in the car and just getting ready for the game.

College Football

While I am willing to accept the fact that most rabid sewists are not rabid college football fans, many are.  Including me.  But if you are not glued to the tv or to your seat at the stadium every fall Sat. please don’t give up on this post.  I do have some good sewing ideas and tips to share.

In the South and many other areas of the country, the countdown to the first game of the next season starts just after the national championship game in January.  That would be the very game won by our Florida Gators for two of the past three years.  But I digress.

We’ve been attending the Gator football games since 1997, the year our daughter was a freshman there.  My wonderful husband went to graduate school there a lonnnnnnng time ago so our ties to UF are strong.  Football season always means a new crop of family memories and a variety of new Gator-sewn items.

But this is a sewing blog, not my son’s football blog, www.orangeandbluehue.com Check it out.  Now let’s talk sewing. Continue reading
