For the Boys

Robert and his bag, after swimming at camp in the hot sun

This little project made me very happy.  It’s always so hard to find sewing projects that boys will like but this one was a hit.

Robert, 6, has a passion for sports.  He has played flag football for several seasons and just finished a week at basketball camp.  Knowing that every day he had to tote his lunch, bathing suit,  towel, etc. I decided to find an athletic bag that could be easily embroidered. Continue reading

Gator Kids

At The Swamp--my handsome son with his children Laurel and Robert, settling in before kickoff. Shelly, their mother, took the picture.

Another September Saturday, another college football game.  Yeah!!!  Some  teams are celebrating, some looking forward to redemption next week.

After Florida’s very disappointing last season, we are celebrating the win in the first SEC game of the season:  Florida Gators 33–Tennessee Volunteers 23.

I love the ability to combine my love of college football with my love of sewing.  In an earlier post, I mentioned that I was embroidering new game day shirts for my three grandchildren. I don’t have a photo of Alastair, who lives on the other side of the state, but here are the other two.

Robert’s shirt is a repeat of last year’s model, a simple Gator Boy design.

Laurel was up for something new so I followed a new trend in college sports wear for girls and women. This style  identifies the team only by name or mascot,  not by team colors.  Instead, pink and gray is used, usually the heather gray you see on sweatshirts or athletic tees.

This frame is built into my Brother Duetta, one of many that can be sized to fill each from from 4 x 4" to 7 x 12".

Dawg Dress Update

Little boys hope to fill their fathers’ shoes.  Kennedy hopes to fill her mother’s cap!  Today,  Mama Amy, was awarded the title Dr. Amy.

Kennedy was a major attraction when she attended the University of Georgia graduation ceremony.  She wears Children’s Corner Lucy with smocked insert Spencer’s Bulldogs.  Her grandmother Judy Day made her outfit for the ceremony and the party that followed.

For more photos and details, see earlier post Special Occasion Smocked Dawg Dress.

How special!

Team Gear and More

dhild's Georgia Bulldog jumper

This Saturday is another day of college football.  In earlier posts I’ve shared my Gator projects, but there are other teams out there with equally enthusiastically sewing fans.

This little jumper made by Amy Spriggs really caught my eye.  In Florida, it is almost always too hot for polar fleece clothing, but in other areas of the country, this miracle fabric has a myriad of uses.  I just had never thought of polar fleece as a jumper fabric.  But isn’t this cute?  I can just see a little Bulldog fan with black leggings and a black long sleeved turtleneck shirt.

Amy has used her embroidery machine to clearly identify her team.  But even without an embriodery machine, it is clear which team the wearer of this garment supports.

Girlie Team Gear

Another Saturday, another game day.  I do love college football.  Today, Clemson nearly toppled Auburn but lost in an overtime.  What a nail biter!

But it brought to mind this little dress, which was probably worn yesterday by a sweet little Clemson fan.

It is another Amy Spriggs creation, made for the daughter of a Clemson Tiger friend.

Her choice of fabrics in Clemson colors is tasteful and creative.  I love the way the white polka dots on orange create interest and suggest texture.  The addition of interesting details–ribbons, rick rack and machine embroidery–give this little popover a real designer look.  Continue reading

Game Day!

I’m still having a grand time here in the  mountains with the grandchildren and their mothers.  This blog is supposed to be about sewing so I’m focusing on game day projects.  The earlier post about football brought even more football fans out of the woodwork, so I hope those of you who are not big fans will indulge me as I pursue one of my favorite subjects.

Today was Game Day for the Gators and most other college football teams.  With a noon kickoff on the schedule, we donned our Gator gear, fed the children an early lunch, set out our snack food and hunkered down for the game.  Robert was clad in the new Gator shirt I embroidered for him, while Alastair wore one of Cousin Robert’s hand-me-down Florida warm up suits.

At last, it’s time for football.  The first game of the year is awaited as eagerly as Christmas and the celebrations last far longer.  Few women outside the deep South understand the seasonal passion that pervades Southern  kitchens, calendars, wardrobes and sewing schedules.

But Millie, Judy, Amy, Suzanne and other readers know all about it and welcome this invasion into their every day lives.

Greek Sewing

Greekpillowpic

Greek life on college campuses can be a wonderful experience.  The costs vary according to school and fraternity, but the cost of the on-going gift giving can have an unexpected impact on the budget.

With back-to-school just around the corner and rush set to begin in a few weeks, it seems timely to offer these gift and garment ideas in the hope that it might be useful to those of you with co-eds packing for university.

Fortunately, my daughter’s sorority experience commenced after the machine embroidery explosion hit the sewing world.   The following text is taken from an article I wrote for Creative Needle  some time ago.  The photos are all taken from the magazine itself.

“It’s All Greek to Me”

On college campuses throughout the country, co-eds proudly wear Greek “letters” proclaiming their affiliation with a social sorority or service club. Students use surprisingly large portions of their budgets buying shirts, caps and other “lettered” items from the specialty stores found in every college town. Continue reading

Roger’s Gator Shirt

You’ve heard it before—our family loves the Florida Gators. Bbut that doesn’t make us unique in this state, or any state for that matter.  The Gator Nation is huge.  Every time the subject of college sports comes up, more Gators make themselves known.

This was the case when I went to out-patient therapy for my first knee replacement  two years ago.  My wonderful therapist, Roger, not only loves the Gators but was himself a lineman on the team during his years in Gainesville.  He attends every home game, as good a fan as he is therapist.

He’s a big, tall guy, size 3XL, a size unavailable in much of the Gator Gear line.  So I was pleased to be able to embroider a shirt for him, in his size.  Continue reading

Fishing Bag

Every grandparent strives to keep things even with the grandchildren but Judy Day manages it better than most.

Her first grandchild, Jackson, was being showered with smocked bubbles and Jon-Jon’s and button-ons when along came his sister, Courtney.  Just three months later, second  baby  girl  came into the family picture,  cousin Kennedy.

Judy scrambles to come up with cool boy things for Jackson and this bag is one of her best.  After embroidering luggage for the girls, Judy embroidered is bag for her little guy. Continue reading
