Fundraiser Pre-School Cot Sheet

Each of us who sews is asked occasionally to make something for a fundraiser.   It feels good to use our skills for a worthy cause and reminds us that we have the power to make this world a better (if only slightly) place because we can sew.

I have really enjoyed participating in these events, especially those requested by  my grandchildren.

Five year old Alastair needed a contribution for his school’s recent fundraising auction.  These sheets were made, displayed and now, after the auction, have been personalized with a child’s name.

I highly recommend cot sheets for a fundraising project.  The materials can come from your stash, as the finished measurement can be pieced combinations of fabric or a single length.  So the cost is just the reduction of yardage in your “resource center.”  Additionally, they seem to be a popular item at these events.  Personalization for a school accessory which gets daily use seems to have had great appeal to parents and friends who placed their bids.

Though I had every intention of adding nothing more than a simple block letter name to each sheet, when it came right down to it, I decided to add a motif to each.   The cherries embellishing Logan’s name were originally from Embroidery Library‘s Button Buddies.

Using my ever useful BuzzEdit3, I removed the satin stitch surrounding the cherry, the veins in the leaves and the 4-hole button dots because they were too large to replicate the dots on the cherries in the fabric.  Next, smaller dots were added, dots which were simply punctuation periods from a font in Brother’s PE-Design, which I use for all lettering.

On the camping sheet, I spent more time looking at and trying to decide which design to choose— a canoe, a tent, a bonfire or the fishing pole.  There was neither a tent nor a canoe that I liked and that would fit with the name.  The camp fire might give a drifting-to-sleep child nightmares.   So that left fishing which seemed like an interesting and harmless motif to insert into the design.

I found this great fishing pole, but the hooked fish looked like a giant shark to me.  So this cute little guy was extracted from an old Viking collection called Summer fun.

I just returned from spending a fun and creatively stimulating day at the Lakeland Quilt and Sewing Expo.  What great ideas I got!  Read about it my the next post.
