How cute is this? A precious student in Puerto Rico made this pendant pin cushion after a long day of sewing and presented it to me on the last day of class. What a thoughtful, personal gift. I love it.
The Loralie doll pin cushion includes many of my personal features.  It reminds me of the American Girls “Me” doll, created with specially selected features to mimic those of a specific child.
When I sew and when I teach, I always have my half-eye glasses and embroidery scissors hanging around my neck. The doll’s brown eyes, just like mine, peer over similar glasses above the scissors hanging around the neck. Of course, full of pins, it looks like a voodoo doll, but I ignore the suggestion.
My little Loralie doll is rife with details. The crazy patch body is embellished with decorative stitches and a monogram. A lace collar sports a red ribbon rose. And don’t you just love the hair and measuring tape bow? FYI, I stay clear of hair bows as I am way too old for flirty accessory, but it’s cute on the doll.
The earrings are really darling–tiny wooden thread spools wound with metallic thread and elongated with a bead.
This student spent a good bit of her sewing time translating my instructions for the ladies in class who did not speak English. After bringing their questions to me and translating the answers, she would rush back to her machine and catch up with those who had been sewing all along. She sewed beautifully and quickly.
What a dear remembrance this is of the generous spirit and unforgettable friends I made in beautiful Puerto Rico.
