One Well-Spent Dollar

the honest-to-goodness Snow White with 6 year old Laurel, Snow White Jr.

This Disney Snow White costume/dress has more lives than a lucky cat.  It just keeps coming back!  Laurel’s homeschool group just spent the day at  Epcot and her mother sent this picture of Laurel wearing her favorite princess dress with Snow White Herself.

3 year old Snow White, aka Laurel Cade, Greg Wiggle, aka Robert Charles, and Robert’s constant companion moose, aka Moosie

The dress has a long history.  And just when I think it has finally seen its last days, it rises like the phoenix to be born again.

When Laurel had just turned 3, but was wearing a 2, her mother Shelly bought the dress at a yard sale for $1.  Its first owner, an unknown 7-8 year old girl,  had worn and lovingly cared for it.

But it was a size 8!!!!!!  With all the confidence of a loving daughter-in-law,  Shelly thought it would be no great challenge for me to cut it down to a 2 or 3.  Uggggghhhhh…I really dislike alterations but accepted the huge garment graciously.

I started with an enormous  tuck at the shoulder and continued with a series of vertical tucks down the bodice front and back.  It was designed to be fitted at or slightly above the waist, but became a dropped waist for sure on our little 3 year old its second owner.

The skirt and underskirt were unceremoniously cut away and serged.  It fit Laurel perfectly and that next Halloween she was transformed into Snow White, body and mind.  I thought I had seen the last of Snow White.

A year later, it was given to a neighbor girl who wanted to wear it for that Halloween.   But Naomi, the third owner was a little bigger, so I let out a few tucks.  Some time later, the dress was given back to Laurel, now  the 4th owner.

Last year, Laurel and the homeschoolers went to a Renaissance Fair.  The Snow White dress would be perfect, it seemed, but it was too short.  An 8″ wide domestic eyelet was stitched to the hem and more tucks were let out.

Now, having exhausted her interest in The Wiggles, Max and Ruby, Backyardigans and other kiddie genres, Laurel is back into princesses.  Last week’s  trip to DisneyWorld with her family generated even more enthusiasm for Disney’s feminine royalty,  thus Laurel’s choice of dress for the homeschoolers Epcot outing.

Most of the tucks have been released.  The skirt is as long as it ever can be.  So am I done with Snow White or will it rise from the ashes?  I hope not.  But with my sewing machine and a persistent interest in Snow White, Shelly surely got a lot of bang for that one well-spent buck.
