Americana Decorating

One bedroom in our cabin has an Americana theme.  We’re pretty patriotic folks and decided this theme suited us.

The quilts and wall decorations were readily available.  Because the cabin is rented out almost half  the time, I didn’t want to make any quilts and fret over whether or not they were being abused.  But almost without exception, our guests have been lovely and few things have been damaged in the 15 years we’ve owned the cabin.

There were no patriotic pillowcases for sale but it didn’t matter, as I prefer to make my own.  With a bolt of  pima cotton broadcloth and my Brother ULT 2003, I was in business.

The quilts were bought on-line and have held up very well.  A whimsical flag quilt add to the mood and covers some of the expanse of the vaulted ceilings.

I’m surprised that it has not faded significantly, even though it gets direct sunlight from a high window directly opposite.

Rather than search for a window valance that suited me, I just made a simple one out of muslin.  Since I had not brought my serger along, I used  12 wt. cotton thread for a heavy roll and whip finish for the top and bottom edges.  A cross stitch was worked over the casing.

It looked a little plain but on this trip, there was no time to embroider.  That summer, one of our fabulous guests, a quilter of some acclaim, sent me this stars and stripes garland.

My constant praise of sewing is probably tiresome to read.  But yet again, I was so grateful that I could make just what I wanted and finish this room to my satisfaction.
