Well, I finally finished Robert’s long since requested yellow towel and I must say I am pleased with the result. I have only a scan of the hood and will post a better picture tomorrow. But I’ve got some bug–or the bug has me–and I didn’t get an outdoor shot of the project today as planned.
First, I have to thank Elisabeth for her recommendation of fabric.com. I found what they called yellow “French terry,” but there are no loops which indicate terry to me. But it is nice, thick, and stretchy–good for wrapping around a little guy.
I cut the 60″ fabric into a 45″ square and then cut a 20″ square for the hood. Fusible knit stabilizer was ironed on to the back of the piece in the embriodery area. The square was folded in half diagonally and the embroidery centered.  After the embroidery, the square was cut down to measure 20″ on the diagonal. Then the folded edge was bound.
Robert chose three designs from Ace Point’s Jumping Dolphins collection.  His family had just taken a vacation to Naples, Florida, where they went on a dolphin watch boat ride. The children were thrilled to see the dolphins racing companionably side-by-side with the boat. So the embroidery design reminds him of that wonderful family time together.
This is an interesting set of embroidery designs. The water is applique’d in place and then a daisy stitch is worked as the fill.  A blue and white stripe fabric from my stash served as the water and the binding. The daisy fill stitch over the stripes gave an interesting effect. I was disappointed in the way the ball stitched out. I wish I had used a dry cover up to fill in the blue better. But the way the stripes extend beyond the ball is probably the result of the knit fabric used. Who knows? Robert doesn’t care.
The dolphins, however, were not applique’ but filled with stitches. I chose to use a piece of gray ultrasuede for the three bodies by simply eliminating the fill stitches in BuzzEdit2. This left the satin stitch outline, around which I trimmed the non-fraying ultrasuede.
I cut the binding 1 1/4″ wide and used the Clover Fusible BiasTape maker, though I didn’t make this bias fusible. These are great little bias makers and I use them frequently.
The towel is bound all around with the blue stripe fabric. Robert loves it and has requested a matching wash cloth from the scraps. Another day, another time……But I’m really happy to have filled this long awaited request from my precious grandson.
